We're Going to the Caribbean

I won two 10k packages for the Caribbean which included a $5k Millions main event buy in, $2k in expenses and eight nights accommodation in a five star resort at the Level Melia Punta Cana , I added an extra two nights to this and of course I brought my wonderful wife along.

One of my good friends Michael Quirke and his other half Jackie also went on the trip. Mike doesn't play poker that often and won this trip in amazing fashion.

Mike logged into his account on PartyPoker one day and found a click 'n' collect token worth $11, this is a promotion Party did, but most of the time it was a $1.10 or $2.20 token you would get. From his free $11 he won a  €55 GrandPrix Killarney phase one seat and from there won his day one seat worth €340 which he played live.

Mike managed to get himself to the Final table and as he qualified online he was given a 'Golden Chip' which meant if you qualified from online and reached the Final table you were guaranteed a $10k package for the Caribbean, but not only did he win this package he also managed a 5th place finish for €12k. Not a bad result from just logging into PartyPoker, actually, it's amazing.

The resort we were staying at was amazing, covering two hundred acres with golf carts to taxi you around the resort, it truly was paradise.

We landed at the reception and there were big cues for checking in, I noticed Dara O Kearney and Mrs Doke were already at the reception desk, whereas we were at least ten deep in the cue. After checking in we got brought to our room which was also amazing, a double shower in the bathroom a huge bed and a Jacuzzi next to the bed and a balcony.

After meeting up with the Dokes and Quirkes soon after we got settled in, we were discussing about the rooms only to discover that the Dokes had no Jacuzzi, Mrs Doke was not pleased about this and had a bit of a rant about how they were well in front of us in the cue. We did continue to wind them up over the Jacuzzi as the trip went on but gladly they are well up for some banter.

Day three I played the main event and late regged which I normally would do anyway. I sit down to seat seven with one million starting stack and immediately there is action, seat five opens from MP, seat six a girl 3bet's from c/o, I fold, seat eight on the button 4bets, seat five folds and the girl 5bets and the button calls, flop is JQx, it goes check check, now I am thinking she could possibly have AA/KK here as the button can easily have QQ/JJ. Turn is like a 5, again it goes check check, now I'm thinking, what the fck is going on here. River is a 2, so board is reading JQX52 rainbow. The girl checks and your man on the button bets like 30% of the pot and she snaps and flips over AJ to win the pot. Wow, just wow. I'm rubbing my hands here already and haven't even played a hand yet.

My first hand of note is where I open the c/o with 55 and get called by a fishy American dude in the sb and the bb makes it up, flop is 974r, it's checked all around, 9 turn and fishy American leads for about 3/4 pot, bb folds, I'm not believing any of this, even though he is playing like a big whale, it still doesn't make much sense to lead this big on the turn even with his 9x hands, possibly could have a 7x hand but unlikely with his sizing so I call and he bombs the 3 river to nearly a pot size bet, none of this made any sense to me so after working it out I eventually call and he flips over AT for A high, a nice scoop for me. I managed to scoop another pot from the same villain with KK in a similar style played pot.

After two levels that I played I was up to 2 million in chips but it was all downhill from here, I lost several pots with the best hand going into flops and the rest is history, unfortunately this was the end of my main event as I busted with one level to go on day 1.

I also played the $550 side event which got nearly 500 entries, I managed to build a big stack in this on day one and got off to great start on day two but lost a few flips and eventually shoving 13bb from the HJ with A7cc running into AK of the BB but I did manage a min cash of $1k busting in 47th place and also got myself a Dominican flag, yippee.

So now we are done with poker for the rest of the trip, we can get into holiday mode, Mrs Cummins was happy with this obviously even though she was quite happy to be working on her tan.

We had some great nights wining and dining, and boozing of course, mostly with the Quirkes and Dokes with a range of choices and all for free as the resort was an all-inclusive.

After one to many beverages Mike decided to give his Caribbean hat to Mrs Doke as she was very fond of it, putting his head into his hands,

"ohh no, what have I done, never getting this back anyway"

The Quirkes were well able to pull the moves at the PartyPoker beach party.

We enjoyed a boat trip with some snorkeling and drinking rum and cokes out in the middle of the ocean (okay, maybe a kilometre or two out), where we were able to stand on the sea bed.

Richie the Rastafarian was our host and our bar man, off his chuck this fella was.

Now for our flight with BA, I really hope I never again have to fly with them.

As its a nine hour flight or there abouts you would at least expect some proper food. About one and half hours into the flight they delivered us with what I would consider not to be good enough to give to a dog, it was basically a lump of mashed potato with two sausages, some really bad veg and a skin of gravy covering it. Our second meal which was breakfast was given out with about one hour to land, so we basically we got fck all for about six and a half hours.

And to run out of beer on the flight was just fcking ridiculous, actually not even half way through the flight they run out of it (all part of there plan obviously), I managed to have two cans of Heineken, miserable fck's.

The BA flight attendants were just completely pig ignorant and really unfriendly. I have flew with quite a few airlines over the years, but this was my first time flying with BA and hopefully the last.

After a successful trip last year I was planning on heading back to Prague for the PartyPoker and Pokerstars festivals but unfortunately I was unable to go so that's a wrap for my live poker for the year. It wasn't quite as successful as last year with live poker but I still did manage seven cashes totalling to about 14k but we did make up for it online with a six figure score in the $5k powerfest on PartyPoker.

Hopefully we will get that seven figure score next year, I'm a firm believer in positive thinking and if we try hard enough and work our hole's off we can achieve anything in life, its all about believing in yourself and visualising what we can achieve in life and what life can be.

My Poker career to date

2001/2002 is when I started to play texas holdem, like most poker players I started off playing small games in pubs and soon after started to play cash games in the Macau sporting club in Cork city. I have always had a gamble in me, from horse racing to sports betting.  I met my wife Amanda in 2000, she was from Killarney where we would end up moving to in 2005. It was from there I got to meet up with other poker players from the Cueclub and we used to travel as a gang of 10-15 to most of the Irish events. As a gang of players we used to discuss a lot of poker, coming back from our trips we would discuss some of the hands we played where we learnt a lot from each other.  I can recall a hand I played in the Macau vs a player who I used to look up to and whom I would be good friends with today, Nicky Power. Can't remember sizing and stacks but its not really important for this, but its just to show that I used to just bluff way to much. I open utg AK, bb defends who is Nicky, flo

Out In The Sticks In Rozadov WSOPE

So I'm going to play a 10k in Kings Casino Rozadov Czech Republic, the WSOPE main event. It was my first ever 10k buy-in. I never thought much, if any, about playing the WSOPE main event but always imagined I would at some stage . It was always a dream to play the WSOP main event which I still haven't managed to do (next year hopefully), I got to play my first Ept in December 2016 in Prague (which didn't go so well, the Euerka did though as I've mentioned in my last blog) and is also my last as Pokerstars have done away with the EPT tour, or just re branded it. At least I'm doing it in the order you would expect, EPT, WSOPE and WSOP.   We were staying in the Park hotel in Pilsen, which was a 45min drive from Kings Casino and it was a pretty nice hotel. Even though the bar in the hotel only opened during the week, what the fck that was all about is beyond me.  A friend of mine travelled with me and I had also got in touch with Dara O Kearney as I knew he wa
